Valentino Sciotti is involved with a number of wineries in Puglia, Campania (he is the man behind Vesevo) and his native Abruzzi. The Gran Sasso wines are made by young winemaker Marco Flacco and display a freshness and directness of fruit that is seldom found in this region. Pecorino is a fairly rare variety, with only about 300 hectares planted in the Abruzzi and the Marches. Its name derives from the fact that a bunch of Pecorino grapes was traditionally considered to have a similar shape to a sheep’s head. The grapes for this wine come from a 15 year old vineyard situated at approximately 150m above sea level.

The wine is fresh and clean on the nose, with nutty, almondy perfumes giving way to crisp, tangy fruit on the palate. An attractive balance of fruit and zingy freshness make this an excellent aperitif. Drink now or over the next few years.
