A Mano Primitivo was first made in 1998. Mark Shannon and Elvezia Sbalchiero, the duo behind A Mano, have worked in the wine business for most of their lives. Elvezia is a northern Italian wine-marketing expert and Mark is Californian winemaker. A Mano comes from the heart of the Primitivo area, in the low hills east of Taranto in Puglia. The region is an old sea bed, full of fossils of clams, oysters and urchins. The altitude is approximately 30-60 metres above sea level (100-200 feet). Annual rainfall is 35 centimetres. The climate is classically Mediterranean as Puglia is a peninsula between the Adriatic and the Ionian seas. This Passito wine is Deep ruby red in colour with a lovely perfume of dried cherries with a characteristic bitter twist. On the palate it is sweet and luscious, with a rounded, rich dried cherry character. Despite its sweetness, it is not cloying and has an attractive clean finish. The Aleatico grapes for the Passito are grown on a vineyard in Gioia del Colle.more ↓ less ↑
