The history of Jurançon begins in effect with Henri IV, born in Pau when it was the capital of the Kingdom of Navarre. The story is that during his christening his lips were rubbed with Jurançon and cloves of garlic, the prelude to any great reign one would imagine. The area of Jurançon lies in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Here, the slopes are very steep and the south-west facing vines require a long growing period. In a good vintage the results can be stunning.
Jean-Bernard Larrieu is one of the poets of Jurançon. In his straight Jurançon sec he achieves tremendous intensity by picking late and using the lees to obtain colour and extract. This delightful number dances a brisk tango on the palate.
This dry style is unoaked. Manseng delivers a pronounced ripe grapefruit flavour with the acidity you'd imagine in citrus fruit allied to a streak of minerality, making it a great partner to anything you'd consider drinking a good Chablis with.more ↓ less ↑
