The DeMorgenzon vineyard finds itself between mountains in the famous Stellenbosch region of South Africa, and is known for its fairly unconventional cultivation techniques. Aside from growing specially chosen flowers between the vines, they also play Baroque throughout the vineyard 24/7 to 'calm the vines'. Whatever they are doing, they are doing it right as their wines are simply outstanding! DeMorgenzon translates as ‘the morning sun,’ and was named due to it being the first part of the Stellenboschkloof valley to receive the morning sun, this is due to its high altitude and particular aspect.

This stunning Chenin Blanc is produced from low-yielding (originally bush trained) vines planted in selected vineyards with granite soils at around 300 metres above sea level. These vineyards benefit from cool sea breezes coming off False Bay which tempers the heat of the summer months. The grapes were hand-picked in four different passes to ensure only those with perfect ripeness make it into the wine. Grapes are then whole bunch pressed, before fermentation in French oak barrels, 25% new. The wine was then aged on its yeast lees for 11 months before being bottled with minimal filtration to ensure maximum flavour in the finished wine.

This 2016 Reserve Chenin has benefited from superb vintage conditions. The wonderfully expressive nose displays aromas of ripe pear and stone fruits, with floral overtones and subtle hints of honey, toast, orange blossom and spice. The palate has great poise and a perfect balance between rich ripe textured fruit and a crisp fresh structure. This is a world class Chenin Blanc of the highest quality. Drink 2017 - 2027.

"The 2016 Reserve Chenin Blanc, which will be released summer 2017, was slightly deeper in color compared to other vintages. It has a composed bouquet with nectarine, melted wax and dried pineapple scents, a touch of dandelion in the background. The palate is fresh on the entry with crisp acidity. I find more nuance and harmony here compared to the 2015, a delicacy married with intensity in the finish, a tang of clear honey on the aftertaste (although there was no botrytis in the vineyard)."  - 93 Pts Neal Martin, Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate
