Gold - International Wine Challenge, 2014

Pinot Noir is the most temperamental of varieties and remains the ultimate challenge for many winemakers - Shaw & Smith has accepted this challenge albeit in a ‘small batch’ way. Site selection, the right clonal mix, miniscule yields and fastidious vineyard management are essential to success.

This is the first vintage to include fruit from the vineyard at Lenswood, which is an exciting development for Shaw + Smith. The wine retains its characters of delicacy and charm. There is floral perfume on the nose, followed by a fresh, textured palate, with red cherry and spice notes. Snappy acidity and fine but grippy tannins keep it fresh and taut.

"From the winery block, and from Shaw + Smith's recently purchased Lenswood vineyard (higher and cooler); a hand-plunged mix of whole berry and whole bunches, with a pre-ferment cold soak and a post-ferment maceration; matured in French barriques. A caboodle of every type of cherry fruit flavour, round and satisfying, long and well balanced. Needs time." 94 Points | Drink by 2023
James Halliday - 2016 James Halliday Wine Companion

"Ripe, sweet, pure-fruited style. Refreshing acidity but deep flavours of fresh young cherries. Silky, textured tannins, elegantly styled with a lively savoury fresh bite." 17.25/20 points (90+/100 points)

"This is pinot noir with strawberry, rose, lilac and other flowers. Medium to full body, firm tannins and bright acidity. A wine with tension and style. Needs a little time to soften, so try in 2016." 92 points
